Coming from someone who grew up in Indonesia:

Food is legit and has that homemade feeling to it. Overall, it gives you a pretty good idea of what authentic Indonesian food taste like if you're not familiar with it. Loved that they have this small section near the cashier where you could get your hands on various Indonesian street snacks. Don't sleep on those green balls with coconut shavings on top.

There are not very many Indonesian restaurants, and we are so fortunate to have Java Spice in Rowland Heights.

Java Spice is located in the Yes Plaza shopping center (close to Tastea). The restaurant is simple with no frills and no fancy decorations - so don't expect a romantic atmosphere. However, if you're looking for a wholesome family dinner, check this place out!

My favorite dishes are two rice dishes, Nasi Campur and Nasi Ayam Komplit. If you're new to Indonesian food, I'd recommend the Nasi Campur. It is a rice dish that comes with marinated fried chicken, spicy beef, and a spicy boiled egg! There is a red sauce that you can use to flavor the white rice- be warned, it's quite spicy! You also get to choose a soup to enjoy with this entree, and by far, the coconut soup is the best!

If you like the marinated chicken, then the Nasi Ayam Complit is your best bet. It's essentially the same as the Nasi Campur, but just the chicken and rice and 2 large slices of cucumber. Again, you get to pick a soup with this entree!

If you're visiting the restaurant on a weekend, try the Nasi Bungkus. This dish is ONLY available on Saturday and Sunday. It's a mixture of rice, curried chicken, spicy coconut beef, and egg wrapped in a banana leaf. The portion size is huge. If you're not accustomed to spicy dishes, this is not for you!

I've dined at this regularly roughly once a month for the past 3 years, and service is always efficient and easy. Recently, I started ordering takeout from here. They are speedy and accurate - they never mess up my order or forget to include anything. I have to admit their phone etiquette could use some improvement, but this family establishment makes wonderful food and gets it served in a speedy manner! Highly recommended!

I've been here on a few occasions and the food is not bad. I recommend their fried rices, but nothing really outside of that. The noodle dishes here are subpar, and just taste like they throw a bunch of seasonings on it, but none of them really stick or infuse together. I've also tried the soup here, specifically the lamb curry and the flavor is just okay. It didn't have the thick consistency that I'd expect from a curry broth, but perhaps their style of soup isn't supposed to be like that. I also found a small fly/gnat in my soup as well. Not a huge deterrent for myself, but might be for some other diners.

Anyways, from the rices, I personally recommend the lamb and the pork belly. The flavor is very yummy. I like to add their house hot sauce and pickled jalapeño peppers to it as well.

Our first time at an Indonesian restaurant. We weren't sure what to order so we ordered the chicken & pork satay (our favorite), the chicken and rice dish w/ coconut soup and the Kway Teaw Siram. For dessert we took home jelly coconut with brown sugar inside.  It was all delicious. My kids and I finished everything.  It's a small family owned shop and they were all very nice and helpful.  The price isn't that bad either everything runs around $10 a dish unless you get seafood.  We would definitely come back.

We tried them for lunch this past week.    Food was bland even though i asked for it to be prepared with some spice.   First impression was tasteless chinese food. One and done for us.
